| More Sergio |
[May. 18th, 2008|06:42 am] |
It was posted on one of the Groo forums that I've put up some unpublished Sergio Aragones art, so now I feel obligated to post a few more.
Here's another one of his famous crowd scenes. Each is more crowded than the last. I think this was drawn in 1998.
This one, from 1983, is an early Groo drawing, but it's one of my favorites. You can see how Groo has changed over the years. His face is a bit more "roundy" now.
Here's something you don't see very often--a Sergio pencil drawing. His pencils are usually almost nonexistent. A circle with a big nose could be Groo. A circle without a nose could be a charging army.
And this is what was on the back of that penciled drawing. Sometimes the backs of Sergio's pages are even better than the front. There might be studies of warrior women, or, in this case, Japanese joinery. I remember getting pages from him after his trip to Tahiti. There were watercolor paintings of landscapes and beautiful sunsets.
Oh, here's the link to that forum: http://feargroo.proboards2.com/index.cgi? |

| The Annotated Pilgrim, Part 5 (!) |
[May. 17th, 2008|05:03 pm] |
A long, long time ago, I started prematurely annotating the Scott Pilgrim series, providing references and "what was he thinking"-type information.
Last summer I printed up Volume 1 and 2 annotations and sold a pile of them at TCAF (with another small run at Chapel Hill Comics late last year, if I recall correctly).
NOW: Filled with dread, nervous to annotate Volume 3, I have yet to even post the end of Volume 2's annotations online.
So I'm doing that today.
If you've read the printed edition from last year, you've read most of this - it's just cleaned up and a few sentences added here and there. (And please note that I won't be reprinting that version, but hopefully will put it all together in a new format after finishing volume 3 and maybe 4.)
Previous installments are here.
The Annotated PilgrimIn which I go through each volume and, uh, annotate.SPOILERS FOLLOW( Volume 2, Part 3 ) |

| Color Usagi |
[May. 17th, 2008|08:09 am] |
Here are a couple of color Usagi pieces from Ken Steacy and Olivier Vatine.
I knew of Ken Steacy's work since Star Reach first serialized The Sacred and the Profane in the early 1980's. I met him a couple of years later in LA--probably at a CAPS meeting after the San Diego Con. We were both invited to be guests at a convention in Winnipeg in 1990. I was probably there with Steve Rude. We traveled to a bunch of conventions together at that time. Anyway, Ken was looking through my portfolio and suggested an art trade, to which I quickly and enthusiastically agreed. He could not decide between two pieces, so I told him to take both. He promised to give me a drawing the next time we saw each other. True to his word, a few months later at the 1991 San Diego Con, he gave me this beautiful airbrushed piece. Yes, it is an actual colored piece, this is long before Photoshop was around.
Vatine is one of my favorite French artists. For me, he is right up there with Moebius and Loisel. He is best known for Aqua Blue, though I prefer his westerns Adios Palomita and Angela. I also have Pink Planet, a beautiful artbook. I was at the 2006 Angouleme festival, signing at my publisher's booth, when someone came up to me and said, "Vatine likes your work. He did this for you." I marveled at the art, but, by the time I looked up, the guy was gone. I have no idea who he was, and I have never met Vatine, though I would like to. I love this piece.
Vatine did the festival poster for the 2006 Quai de Bulles in St Malo. |

From Circe, From Calypso gratis.
It's not so bad here on Aeaea on Ogygia with my witches my nymphs my little nobodies and their slim fingers.
It's not so bad here in the dark cluster of the trees in the wet breath of the sea in the marble halls I conjure in the luminous caves I have not bothered to smooth.
It's not so bad here where every garment I weave from the silk of my spiders from the ship-gripping kelp is for my wearing is for my warmth.
It's not so bad here: I have unwatered wine I have ambrosia I have blood I have milk waiting in a jug, in a vase, in my heart, in my breast,
it's not so bad here, in, of, with,
without. |

| Once in Atlanta!!! |

| | "If You Want Me" - The Swell Season | ] | Hey everybody! I saw Glen and Mar live on Tuesday in Atlanta and the show was absolutely amazing!!!! :D I'm not exactly sure what I was expecting (possibly something different from seeing just the Frames?) but let me tell you that you will not be disappointed! I saw them in a new and very large arena up in northwest Atlanta and although Glen seemed a little disconcerted that the room was too big, they rocked the house! There was so much energy in the room and the crowd erupted in applause when the band walked out. It wasn't just Mar, it was everyone. All of the Frames were there and Colm was on fire. The sound out of everyone was so clear and crisp. Glen said Mar had bet him $100 that he couldn't be quiet and he lost... big time. ;) But I was glad he did because he was in fine form and told tons of stories and talked about all of the songs, offering up new perspective on new ones as well as old favorites. The set list was amazing as well but I won't spoil the surprises you might have if you see them! ;) Marketa played lead guitar and sang frequently and joined Glen up front for many of the better known Frames songs as well as quite a few covers! It was an absolutely incredible and magical night!!! My girlfriend had never seen them live and she was blown away! If you liked Once you'll love The Frames, check out the tour schedule and go! And take your friends and show them how much power the heart can have and what real music is all about. :)
I was a little far away so my pictures turned out pretty bad, but Thanks to Flickr member Patcave I can share these with you!

| Of teeth and hair and movies |
[May. 16th, 2008|11:51 am] |
Our internet has been odd. Scott has been gone. The girls have needed me lots. I have not been online much.
Winter (after two half days of school and two dentist appointments) now has clean teeth, no cavities (technically she had that before, we just know it now) and one less tooth. At the first appointment, which was on Wednesday, they took x-rays, then we had to come back for the cleaning on Thursday. Wednesday night Winter lost half of one of the baby teeth. They decided to pull the other half when we went back the next day. Winter was not a happy camper, and they lied to her and told her they were only going to wiggle it. I was torn, I don't like lying to her, but I knew that she wouldn't have let them do it if she knew. And they told her it wouldn't hurt, and I knew it would. She has a very low pain threshold. Things always hurt her. It was not a fun afternoon.
That night however, her mouth no longer hurt, she was able to eat again, and really, it had been for the best. But it made me all anxious and tense for many hours. I do not like it when my kids are in pain.
Winter wrote a surprisingly mature "monologue" about love. I will try to get her to post it. Her writing is taking off. It is scary how well both my kids write. (well, I think they write well anyway).
Sky's hair is a new color. We did it last night. Looks really good to me.
I went to see Speed Racer last weekend and really enjoyed it. Don't think I mentioned that here yet. It is not a good movie, but it is massive amounts of fun if you were a fan of the old show. I was. I loved the show. Interestingly, the things I didn't like about the show, were the things I didn't like about the movie. Same for the things I loved about the show. And. Oh. Racer X. I adored him as a kid. I loved him in the movie.
This weekend, the plan is to see Son of Rambow and perhaps The Fall if we can find it. And I also plan on dragging Scott and Winter to see Speed Racer as I saw it sort of by myself.
Lori will be around this weekend to take pictures of Sky because she is being mentioned in a new book. I do not know if this is secret or not, so I will just say that it has nothing to do with Scott. Sky is there because she is awesome and female. And young? Not sure.
As I get old my memory is fading fast.
Scott gets home today and doesn't leave again for many months. If he is to be believed, than the kids will be done with school, done with vacation, and back at school again before he goes on another trip.
I will be very surprised if this is what actually happens. |

| Published Usagi |
[May. 16th, 2008|08:24 am] |
Here are three published Usagi drawings by two creators--Frank Miller and Guy Davis.
Frank did this as a cover to Dark Horse Presents. I inquired about the original, and was told, "Frank does not sell his originals..." I was actually relieved, because I knew I could not afford it. "...but he wants to GIVE you that piece." Wow. I returned the favor a couple of years later by giving him a Sin City drawing I had done for a Dark Horse convention giveaway comic.

I have been a huge Guy Davis fan since I picked up the first issue of Baker Street. Since then, he was the artist for Sandman Mystery Theater, his own Marquis, and is currently drawing Mike Mignola's BPRD. We have traded a bunch of sketches, pin-ups and story pages over the years. I was very intimidated when I first saw him in person--a big guy clad in black leather, chains, and an orange mohawk. He turned out to be a truly nice person--even today without that mohawk. |

Scott Pilgrim Vs the World movie news: Mary Elizabeth Winstead is Ramona Flowers
EDIT: the original Hollywood Reporter story appears to be moved or missing. Here, though, is the nicest article I've read, from firstshowing.net.
(Also, PS, anyone who introduces Ms. Winstead as a "babe" or "hottie" and/or illustrates their blog/article with a Maxim-style lingerie shot: wow. I have no respect for you.) |
